Leech Lake, Mille Lacs Band top officials attend State of the Union Address

Top elected officials from two of the five Ojibwa bands in Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District were Congressman Rick Nolan’s guests at President Obama’s State of the Union address on Jan. 28 in Washington, D.C.

Melanie Benjamin, Chief Executive of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, and Carri Jones, Tribal Chair of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, were seated in the gallery overlooking the Floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for the joint session of Congress, which also includes the President’s Cabinet and members of the U.S. Supreme Court.
