Emery James Jenkins, 38, of Inger, was arrested on Oct. 23 for the death of his 2 1/2 month old son, Joseph Jenkins.
On Oct. 16 deputies received a 911 call reporting a baby not breathing at Jenkins’ Inger residence. CPR was performed The baby was transported to Deer River Hospital then airlifted to Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, where he died the next afternoon, Oct. 17.
The criminal complaint stated that when authorities arrived at the home on Oct. 16, they received information that the infant was bitten by a neighbor’s dog four days ago and had fallen out of a swing one week prior.
An investigator spoke with Jenkins, who claimed he dropped the baby on of his head while they were in the shower. Jenkins also told the investigator that the baby had fallen from a swing and was bitten by the neighbor’s dog when the baby was in a car seat and was wearing a monkey suit.
An autopsy was performed on the infant on Oct. 18. The examiner noted that the infant had severe blunt force trauma to his body, including a skull fracture and multiple rib fractures. The examiner also noted multiple abraisions and injuries to the infant’s chest, abdomen, hands, fingers, feet and toes which may have been caused by biting or a cutting object.
