Deer River Community Cafe to benefit from Wal-Mart challenge grant

The Community Cafe in Deer River and Grand Rapids are the recipients of a $20,000 grant from the Food Pantry Holiday Makeover Challenge hosted by Wal-Mart. The Facebook voting took place between Dec. 2 and 12. The top 75 food pantry vote-getters in the nation received a portion of the $1.5 million giveaway.

Even though they got off to a slow start, the Itasca County community cafes continually climbed the ranks to 38th out of the top 75. “This says a lot about our communities and the support we have through friends and family widespread, that this went beyond us, to encouraging their contacts to vote for us,” said Sheila Rae Maki, a spokesperson for the Community Cafe.
