Library pilots documentary film series
Grand Rapids Area Library will launch a three-part documentary film series starting Wednesday, March 4 at 6 p.m. with the showing of “Fed Up.” Films will be shown the first week of each month March, April and May.
The idea of showing documentary films was brought to the library’s Program Committee in January by John Otterbein, a new resident of the area. Otterbein, who previously lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan, said the library there had a good following for documentary films and discussions of the films. With the rising number of young adults who do not watch commercial television, he said, documentaries were a great way to engage people in discussing a variety of social topics. Otterbein offered his help and interest in getting such a series off the ground.
The Committee agreed that while winter months may offer preferred timing for such a series, it would pilot a few films in the spring of 2015 to gauge interest. The films will be shown in the library’s community room starting at 6 p.m. on March 4, April 2 and May 7.
