James Peck, Itasca Class of 1960, has been named as one of the 2015 Outstanding Alumni. He was honored at a luncheon and ICC’s Graduation Ceremony in May.
Jim, a former resident of Deer River and 1958 graduate of Deer River High School, played on the first DRHS baseball team which was coached by Bob Murray.
He received his Associate in Science degree from Itasca Junior College then attended the University of Minnesota earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. His long career in Pharmacy, includes owning and operating Deephaven Drug, working for OmniCare and still practicing part-time at various Target stores.
Jim’s life-long passion is coaching baseball. He has been a volunteer coach for 52 years, touching the lives of countless young men. For the past 42 years, he has coached American Legion Baseball in the Minnetonka School District. He is the only volunteer youth coach to be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He has received numerous baseball and community awards including the coveted “11 Who Care” Award from KARE 11 TV in Minneapolis. Jim has almost 1700 baseball career wins to his name, including four State Championships. In 2002, his team was American Legion National Runner-up out of 5,400 teams that had started the season. His teams have played in tournaments both nationally and internationally, giving players important cultural experiences. Jim works tirelessly year-round promoting baseball by fundraising, organizing tournaments, networking with colleges and universities, and hosting special clinics for players and coaches.
