Readers support referendum; dimsmayed by Deer River council’s decision not to endorse it

Dear Editor,

We write this letter as relatively new citizens, voters and taxpayers in Deer River; we chose to build a retirement house here in 2010 because of the friendly and caring people who live in and around Deer River. We have no family living in this city, but feel a great responsibility to support the children of this school district. The referendum is a modest attempt to combine resources to support many segments of the community including:

Working parents who use the Boys and Girls Club afterschool programs as a safe place for their children to learn, and grow as responsible young people.

Seniors who can have opportunities to use their skills and experiences to support kids.

Early Childhood and Kindergarten that provide children with skills that lead to school success.

We were pleased and encouraged to add our letter of support for the school referendum to those of Gilbert Zamora, CPO, Boys and Girls Club and our Sheriff, Victor Williams.

However we are equally dismayed to read of the Deer River City Council’s contentious treatment of Gwen Smith as she appeared before the Council to ask them to endorse the referendum, and furthermore we are saddened by the council’s callous “motion that we do not endorse this.”
