Steam Whistle

Gary Peck of Deer River, who found the steam whistle that the Upper Midwest Region Classic Car Club of America had presented to Showboat in 1964 at a garage sale in Grand Rapids, decided that he would give it back to the car club. “It really belongs to them,” he said. “I could sell it for a pretty good price, but at the end of the day I know that I will feel better by making that decision. I’m not asking them for anything.” On Sept. 22 he packaged the steam whistle up and sent it off, along with some photos that he obtained from the Itasca County Historical Society. Photo by Louise H.
