The Bible Says …

A friend of God!

by C. Marvine Scott

What does it mean to be God’s friend? How can we become friends with the Creator of all things? Jesus is God in the flesh. The Bible says “All things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made.” John 1:3

I have recently been thinking about nations who were were ruled through the centuries by a King. We have no idea in America what that is like. Queen Esther didn’t want to approach her husband the King because he hadn’t visited her for awhile. If she approached him when he hadn’t called her, she would be killed unless he held out the gold scepter. Well he did and she ended up saving her people from death. But the point here is that the rule of a King was absolute.

Here in American we have a President. We have freedom of speech. We can bad mouth him all we want without danger of repercussion. This is very nice for all of us but I was thinking lately that we don’t learn too much about respect. We do to a degree but I think we are missing something here.

I think we do need to realize that Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The Bible says He holds all of the universes together in His hand. How? I have no idea but He is big!

Jesus called twelve men to be His disciples when He walked this earth. They followed Him everywhere. They ate what He ate. They slept where He slept. They listened while He spoke and taught them daily for three and a half years.

At the end of that time just before He was crucified Jesus told the 12 that their relationship had changed. Up to now they were His disciples but now He was calling them His friends. There relationship was taking on a new aspect – that of friendship with the Living God!

How do we become God’s friend? We first have to realize who He is and what He has done for us. He took our place on the Cross so our sins could be forgiven and we could live for Him now and eternity.

Then we have to get to know Him. How do we do that? Pastor Kenny Scott of the True Life Church in Jesse Lake recently had a prayer conference for his church. One of the hours we had to each get by ourselves and read about four chapters. Then we were to reread them, underlining the parts that spoke to us. Then we were to reread what we underlined and write on a tablet how that personally affected our lives. Then as a group we each shared what God showed us and one person would pray for the persons sharing until all had shared.

The amazing thing was that God spoke to every person in a special way because we first of all knew Him and we each sought Him and asked Him to speak to us through the Word. We were all blessed.

The disciples followed Jesus 3 1/2 years before they became friends. When you meet a stranger, are you friends? No. You are strangers. If you spend time together and get to know one another, you can become friends.

In becoming the friend of God, we cannot be arrogant. He says “You are my friends, if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave doesn’t know what his master is about; but I have called you friends, because everything I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” John 15:14-15 (King James uses word “Servant” instead of “slave.”)

I knew the Lord as my Savior for many years before I came to understand the love of the Father as well as the love of Jesus. The longer we walk with Jesus, the better and closer our relationship.

Dear Lord, I see your lovely Face,
Both masculine and strong.
I see the teardrops coursing down
For all those in the wrong!
I would that You would speak to me –
That You would call ‘my name.’
But should You answer me,
I know, I’d bow my head in shame!

I know You prayed for sinners;
And I know your prayer went through:
“Dear Father God, forgive them,
For they know not what they do.”
That prayer was for all sinners –
Myself included, too.
When we break God’s Commandments
We are crucifying YOU!

My heart is broken with my sin!
I’m filled with deep remorse!
But, even when I dare to pray
I do not hear Your Voice!
I have a poor reception, Lord,
I can’t turn on the light.
And so it is I do not hear
The voice of God tonight!

God’s channel’s always open.
He hears our faintest prayer;
But our reception is so bad –
We simply do not hear!
Heaven is the Central Office;
God’s been waiting for your call.
The answer is assuring –
“Sinner, I forgive you ALL.”

If you don’t know Him, I urge you to get to know Him. He is the most Amazing, Incredible, Precious and Perfect Savior, Lord and Friend.
