The Lawrence Lake bridge in the south section of the Suomi Hills semi-primitive non-motorized area near Marcell, has been closed due to safety concerns. Chippewa National Forest engineers recently completed a bridge inspection and determined that the wooden structure is unsafe for use. Closed signs have been posted at the Lawrence Lake bridge, Suomi Hills trail intersection, and Suomi Hills trail parking areas. The 19-mile Suomi Hills trail is located just off Highway 38, six miles south of Marcell.
“There are plans to replace the bridge before the busy cross-country ski season,” noted North Zone Public Recreation Team Leader Ken Hansen. “We hope to partner on the bridge reconstruction with some of the local trail groups that enjoy the Suomi Hills Area.” The rolling topography of the Suomi Hills offers cross-country skiing and mountain biking opportunities at intermediate and advanced skill levels. Suomi Hills is groomed in the winter. For more information on the bridge closure, or to learn how you can get involved in the bridge reconstruction project, please contact Ken Hansen at 218-835-3116.
