(In 1998 Deer River was preparing to celebrate its centennial. Following are excerpts from the January 22, 1998 Western Itasca Review.)
Deer River is 100 years old -Incorporated January 22, 1898. They called it the “way-side station,” “a hole in the swamp” and “the longest whiskey row in the state.” It was incorporated by a group of pioneers, lumbermen and settlers. One of those men was W.J. Taylor, editor of The Itasca News whose business had already been burned out once by January 1898 but he “rose from the ashes.”The content you are trying to access is only available to members. Sorry.
