Senate Bonding Committee visits Deer River

The Minnesota State Senate Bonding Committee visited Deer River on Jan. 30 to meet with city officials at the Northern Star Cooperative main office. The senators were very impressed with the presentation and proposal made for state bonding dollars to be used for improvements to the wastewater treatment ponds and the replacement of deteriorated sanitary sewer mains and water mains throughout the City of Deer River. The presentation was led by City Engineer Bob Beaver. He said, “It’s important to note that the city’s existing sewer and water mains are over 60 years old.” The total estimated cost for this project is $7 million. The city is requesting $3.5 million from the state through bonding application. Governor Dayton believes that projects like these merit state investment and has proposed an additional $857 million for urgently needed local projects. He looks forward to working with the Minnesota Legislature in the upcoming legislative session scheduled for Feb. 20 at the state capitol, to include these types of projects in the final bill.
